What is IONA® NIPT ?

The IONA® test is a non-invasive prenatal test for pregnant women which estimates the risk of a fetus having Down’s syndrome (T21), Edward’s syndrome (T18) and Patau’s Syndrome (T13). The IONA® test is an advanced screening test carried out on a small blood sample taken from the mother’s arm with no risk of miscarriage. With the extended test (Nipt Utökad) it is also possible to analyse the gender chromosome variations. NIPT has several advantages over other methods of fetal screening. The test can be performed earlier in pregnancy and is 99 % accurate. This means that you get a more reliable result with NIPT than with other screening methods, such as Combined Ultrasound and Blood test (Nuchal Translucency). Fetal sex determination is available as an option.

NIPT: How it works and who can have it?

During pregnancy, the placenta leaks cell-free DNA which circulates in the maternal bloodstream. NIPT measures the amount of that cell-free DNA and can detect small changes in the DNA ratio between the maternal and placental-fetal cell-free DNA when a fetal trisomy 21, 18 or 13 is present.Trisomies occur when three, instead of the usual two, copies of a chromosome are present.

The IONA® NIPT test is suitable for pregnant women from week 10 + 0 (first day of last period) and is suitable for both single or twin pregnancy and assisted pregnancies such as IVF or surrogate.

The IONA® NIPT Extended test (NIPT Utökad) gives additional answers about gender chromosome abnormalities. Gender chromosome abnormalities generally produce milder and more diffuse symptoms than trisomies , such as learning disabilities and infertility.

NIPT is generally not suitable for women with cancer or who themselves have trisomic syndrome or have undergone a blood transfusion in the last 12 months.

NIPT helps you find out if the fetus can be affected by any of the trisomies 21 (Down’s), 18 (Edward’s) or 13 (Patau’s). Trisomy occurs when three, instead of two, copies of a chromosome are formed. Edwards and Pataus syndromes are more rare than Downs but serious as they can affect an infant’s survival.
